What's Your Fee? I get asked every time I get a call or a text message from a prospective client who needs something notarized. It's natural to wonder, "How much should this cost?"

For me, notary service is about transparency, clarity, and THE LAW - so let's break down what the law says about notary fees in California.

Notary Fees Are Regulated by the State

In California, notaries public are not allowed to charge arbitrary fees. The maximum fee for a standard notarization is set by the Secretary of State and is currently capped at $15 per signature for most notarial acts, including:

  • Acknowledgments

  • Jurats (Oaths/Affirmations)

  • Power of Attorney Documents

  • Affidavits

  • Passport Documents

  • Yadda, yadda

This means you can always expect consistency in the basic cost of a notarial act, no matter which notary you visit.

What About Mobile Notary Travel Fees?

While the actual notarization fee is capped, travel fees for mobile notary services are not regulated by the state. These are considered a separate service and are typically based on distance, time of day, or urgency. At Jones Notary Service, all travel fees are disclosed upfront — no surprises, ever.

The goal is to provide professional, convenient service while maintaining transparency and fairness in pricing.

Why This Matters

Knowing your rights as a client helps you avoid being overcharged or misinformed. Unfortunately, not all notaries follow the rules - but I follow all state guidelines closely. As both a Commissioned Notary Public and a Registered Legal Document Assistant (LDA), I take legal compliance and client trust very seriously.
